2022 smaRT Festival Shines

Bright colors and beautiful sounds washed over the California Center for the Arts on Saturday, May 7,  as the Escondido Union School District celebrated the 10th annual smART Festival.

The festival featured thousands of pieces of two- and three-dimensional art created by our talented students. In addition, musicians from middle school band programs performed select pieces, including a few incredible solos. Visitors took part in hands-on activities, including art projects provided by Monart.

EUSD was honored to be joined by special guest, including Escondido Mayor Paul McNamara and a representative of County Supervisor Jim Desmond, who presented district leaders with a Certificate of Commendation recognizing the community contributions of the smART Festival.

No student is left out when it comes to the arts in EUSD; all 24 schools, with works from all grade levels, were represented in the smART Festival.

The range of artworks created by our students, under the direction of teachers and art docent volunteers, is vast. There were sculptures crafted from recycled materials alongside intricately designed clay pieces. Two-dimensional artworks included pieces created from lessons in quilling, linocut, geometric shapes, and perspective, and on artists ranging from Monet to Van Gogh and more. There were examples of self-portraits and self-reflection, with themes focused on nature, human rights, personal resolutions, and more. Through the “My Story” photo project, students amplify their voices while learning the fundamentals of photography in a beautiful merger of language arts and visual arts.

Overall, the 2022 smART Festival was an awe-inspiring demonstration of creativity and critical thinking. Thank you to every individual and team who came together to make the return of this event possible!
